I currently work as a contract Mechanical Engineer, and I've worked on everything from consumer products to tanks. I'd say going into business for yourself is the only way to really be autonomous. Creativity is a must as well. As far as flexibility, I make my own hours. There are days I just don't feel like working at all, so I don't. There are also days where I work 12-14 hours.
