Air travel is reported to cause up to 10% of the total greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Other reports say this number is more like 4%. Either way, this number is large and growing, and jet travel services a very limited part of the earth's population. I'm not saying it's the biggest cause, but it is very significant. I've posted some links to interesting articles.

the biggest factor causing global warming is carbon dioxide emitted from various sources such as from vehicles,power plants, etc.

The climate of the earth moves in natural cycles. We are still in a warming cycle from the last ice age so it is still get warmer. However, there is no doubt that the burning of coal, oil, etc. is accelerating the problem.

This may sound far-fetched, but many people feel that cattle farming is the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Why? Most of the deforestation that is going on is done to clear land for cattle farming. The cleared land is then loaded with huge numbers of cattle, which themselves produce lots of methane gas through their natural digestion processes. But the main problem is that the land itself, previously protected by a forest canopy, becomes completely useless within a few seasons and more land is needed. The abandoned land becomes rock hard, and uses none of the sun's energy for photosynthesis and carbon dioxide elimination.

ok, just done a bit of research. & unfortunately the results aren't as exacting as I'd like to've found. but still...
1. 40% of CO2 supposedly comes from burning fossil fuels for electricity (2002 study in the US)
2. 33% of CO2 comes from burning petrol for cars
3. 3.5% comes from aeroplanes (which may rise to 15% before long). And I've heard elsewhere its about 10%
4. 12% comes from 'buildings structure'. Not sure what this means though, whether its old biddies like my grandma turning up the heating or from construction costs
5. methane is supposed to be the 2nd most important contributing greenhouse gas after CO2, and it comes mainly from rice-growing, bovine flatulence (their words), bogs & a few others
6. deforestation - supposed to be the 2nd biggest cause of atmospheric CO2
7. Nitrous Oxide - this is naturally produced by oceans & rainforests, but also by manufacturing, agricultural fertilizers, catalytic convertors on cars & burning organic matter. Not sure of its effect though
8. Permafrost melting. This is supposed to be another biggie, though I've no details on it

The UN Agriculture Organization published a report which states that greenhouse gas emissions created by livestock are greater than those generated by all the transportation in the world combined. Unfortunately, very few people know about this because of the great power that the meat industry holds. Oh, and by the way, the swine flu was also directly caused by factory farming, but I guess they forgot to mention that, too. GO VEGAN!
